Summer is almost in full swing here in Chicago. This means it is time to pull out your open toed shoes and let your feet and toes breathe the sweet, summer air! Some people are able to let their feet loose without any thought, others dread this time of year for that very reason. If you suffer from a fungal toenail infection, the warm weather could be a stressful and embarrassing thought for you. Fungal nail infections are a common foot health problem that could be present for years without causing pain. The sooner your fungal toenails are addressed and treated the better the success when trying to get rid of them. Fortunately there are several tips you can keep in mind to avoid becoming a victim of toenail fungus.

Prevent toenail fungus by following these simple precautions:

  1. Exercise proper hygiene and regularly inspect your feet and toes.
  2. Keep your feet clean and dry.
  3. Avoid going barefoot in public facilities.
  4. Clip your toenails straight across so that the nail does not extend beyond the tip of the toe.
  5. Use a quality foot powder (talcum, not cornstarch) in conjunction with shoes that fit well and are made of materials that breathe.
  6. Avoid wearing excessively tight hosiery, which promotes moisture. Socks made of synthetic fiber tend to "wick" away moisture faster than cotton, especially for those with more active lifestyles.
  7. Disinfect home pedicure tools and do not apply polish to nails suspected of infection.
  8. Bring your own personal pedicure tool kit with you when going to get a pedicure at a salon. Kits as such can be purchased at our office for only $15.00, which is a small price to pay to avoid a fungal nail infection!

If you are already a victim of toenail fungus, there is no need to worry! There are several treatment options available for you to see clear toenails on your feet again. At DM Foot & Ankle Associates, we offer three different options for treating toenail fungus depending on your personal infection: topical solutions, oral medication or laser treatment. It is important you consult with your physician before initiating any type of treatment to ensure your nails are being properly evaluated and diagnosed. There is a solution for you, be sure to come see us at DM Foot & Ankle to find out which is best!
